Today it's the final of the King's Cup (Spanish Cup). Barcelona is playing against Athletic Bilbao. 1/3 of the tickets were for Barcelona, 1/3 for Bilbao and 1/3 for the Spanish Soccer Federation. Many many people I know from Barcelona couldn't get a ticket and they are home now. But, I can't do anything but wonder, how come that about 75% of the people in the stadium are Bilbao supporters and there's thousands of Bilbao supporters in the area of the stadium that was suposed to be neutral with the tickets for the Spanish Feberation?
It is sad to be from a country were everybody dislikes catalans and does not want Barcelona to win. We are like if we were playing in Bilbao with only a couple thousand supporters in a small corner of the stadium.
Apparently in Spain nobody likes that a spanish team is having its best season ever and with many chances to win the spanish league, the King's Cup and Champions League. Pathetic.
As usual, not proud to be from España, el pais de la patraña.

response to my letter to Conseller Saura
Senyor xxxxxxxxxx,

police charge in Barcelona
I sent this letter to the major of Barcelona. If anyone knows how can I make it reach other people such as the President de la Generalitat, el Conseller Saura, etc, please let me know.
Excm. Sr. Jordi Hereu i Boher,
Roger Piqueras Jover

...looking for Latika...
...and deservedly the movie Slumdog Millionaire won 8 Oscar's...
...aparently, Latika is going to star in the next Woody Allen movie...
It was very cold for 3 days and now it is, again, not that cold (30 to 40F is not cold to me anymore). I kind of miss the snow and the intense cold... but it seems it will snow on sunday. If it snows a lot, i'll take pictures again.
By the way, I have many new pictures that I keep forgetting to post on flickr... I'll post them soon.
And that's all folks...
...for today, I'll try to write more soon...Thursday, February 19, 2009
Latika, where are you?
Everybody should see this movie. Not just because it is a great, beautiful movie that (deservedly) is nominated to 9 Academy Awards, but also because the whole movie leaves you with such a nice good feeling... it's like this movie turns everyone into an optimistic. It also has a plus if you are a guy, which is that you'll fall in love with Latika...Not much going on around here lately... for some reason it is not cold anymore. About 30-40F (about -3 to 5 celsius) every day. It is nice but, to be sincer, I miss the cold and the snow. Now it is difficult to get dressed, and I always think it is too warm. Aparently this is very very uncommon for a February in NY... maybe it's the climate change. Oh, and when it is very cold it snows... but now it rains instead and, trust me, it's waaaaay better when it snows than when it rains. I actually just needed a few months in NY to hate-hate-hate the rain.

A bit of random things going on, I went to an amateur fashion show last weekend. A friend was modeling there and it was great. The on sunday I went to a rock show by Flogging Molly (http://www.floggingmolly.com/). They mix irish traditional music with rock/punk-rock, with a great result.

me duele la cara
Me duele la cara (my face hurts), and it is not for the reason that Hombres G sang in their famous song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80CBtRbudvk&feature=PlayList&p=D6E567F04B3BD11D&playnext=1&index=82), it is just because I just walked from home to my office.
It takes approximatelly 10 to 15 minutes... time enough to freeze if the temperature is -13 degrees celsius.
So, following with my gathering of rules to survive a NY winter:
Rule #6: If t is the time you have to walk to your work/gym/date/whatsoever and T is the current temperature, cover your face with your scarf if (t>10 minutes && T<-10 C).
Anxiom to rule #6: If you want to experience the funny feeling of your blood getting back to your face and slowly heating it, try to not follow the last rule. Only recommended if t<25 min.

wind, ice, snow... cold
New York in winter is beautiful. Everything looks, for some reason, more "romantic". Smokey sewer's, a white and green Central Park, crowded cafeterias and restaurants, double doors at the restaurants and bars to avoid freezing the customers each time somebody gets in... a countless number of things are different here these days. And that seems to atract countless tourists (mostly national tourism) challenging the weather to see the city that never sleeps in winter.
However, it is not as nice at it seems. It is COLD. Very COLD. Did I mention it is COLD? Yeah, it is, indeed, COLD. This is annoying at the beggining but, once used to it and, specially, once one has found the optimal combination of clothing, it becomes not that bad. Even if it snows and your street is covered in snow...
Actually, when it snows it is not that cold. But I already learned rule number 1 of "how to surivive a winter in NY":
Rule #1: if today it's snowing, tomorrow it's going to be very COLD.
Anxiom to rule #1: Same applies if today it rains and it is winter.
There's another very important rule to always keep in mind:
Rule #4: If it's been snowing very recently (at most one or two days ago), it is cold and it rains, tomorrow everything will be very slippery. Watch out where you step!
Anxiom to rule #4: One can't see through snow, but one can see through ice. So, if there's "something" on the floor but you can still see the floor, that's ice, choose the other sidewalk. (This anxiom is void in the case of being everything covered by ice and snow)

Back to work has been a bit tough so far. I have to finish and wrap up some work in 2 weeks but I had originally scheduled at least 6 for it, so I guess I will be busy the next few days.
On the other hand, I am in the process of re-decorating my living room. I got a sofa-bed (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70087108) (potential visitors, you do have now a place where to sleep in my apartment that is not an inflatable matress), a tiny tv stand and I am planning to visit MOMA someday very soon to get a few posters or painting replicas.
Pictures coming soon...
Not much more to explain. Back to my routine of work, work out and running at the gym 2 or 3 days a week plus a weekend run in the park (when it is not freezing cold)... plus eventual bi or tri-weekly visits to my local beer spot, a bar named 1020 (http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7171497/).

New York City

...I am back... Sorry, I know it has been a while since I wrote here for the last time. Last month has been hectic. However, I have tried to be in touch with all of you as much as I could... excepte per la familia, que la tinc una mica oblidada, pero no patiu, que ja torno a ser aqui.
So, as I already told you, I moved from California to New York City. My first impression of living here (I had already been here last year on vacations) was that things were different, in terms of what I like to call "welcome to the real world". Move into an unfurnished and empty apartment, go to IKEA, waith for the furniture to come, assemble it (I happen to be really bad putting furniture together... the proof is in the drawer in my room...)...
A naive person (like somebody who just moved from Orange County) would expect to have electricity and water in the apartment, but here you have to call to activate the service. No internet, no tv... I had to call the cable company and it took them a week to send me a cable guy... and he was not Jim Carrey, too bad! (awesome movie, watch it! haha)
Finally, once I had my room furnished, tv and internet, things got better. Some comments about my life here would be that I like NY a lot, it is like a real european city and in some ways it really reminds me of Barcelona. However, I must admit I got used to the Southern California way of life and I miss it a lot... I feel tempted to move back there sometime in the future... but we'll see. Also, people in NY is very different than there. I am not saying they are worst (not at all, they are as nice and fun as people living in California), but it is more difficult to meet people here. However, I already know quite a few people and even a group of persians I play soccer with.... outdoors 11x11 soccer though, I still have to find a place where I can play futsal.
About daily live, so far I am mostly working a lot, going 3 times a week to the gym and running very often in Central Park. I have fallen in love with running in Central Park and I have to think about how will I manage myself to keep doing it in winter without freezing my ass. I always run around that sort of lake you can see in the picture. It takes me about 10 minutes to reach it, and then run around it is about 20 minutes... well, actually, I am not really sure yet how long is it to run around and how long does it take me. I just go there, run around twice and go back home, and when I get home I am very tired.I also meet often with some friends, and on weekends we always do some night plan. This is one of the things that are better than in California, since NY is a 4am town and public transportation takes you anywhere 24/7.
For the ones interested in the nerd-freak stuff, I am working in a project about wireless networks (como no) based in OFDMA technology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OFDMA) and mostly on WiMax networks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimax). Also, the work focuses on analyze "what happens" and to solve the interference problems when, in a very near future, femtocells (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femtocell) are added to the current networks.
I really like the project (so far it is not causing me many problems, but for sure sooner or later I will hate it) and it is very interesting because I am focusing it towards a "industry" perspective, so it will look very nice in my curriculum and it will give me lots of experience that will be really valued and useful to find a job... By the way, the idea of getting a job is still in my mind, so this current work is not definitive yet...
As a random comment, every morning, when I walk to work, I walk in front of cathedral of st John the Divine. It is really funny because there's always a coach of spanish (and catalan) tourists and they (we) always look the same. It is really obvious they are from Spain. And it ashames me a bit to hear them every morning to complain about everything, say bad things about people who are simply sitting on the stairs having breakfast and discuss ways to sneak into the cathedral without having to pay a voluntary donation...For some reason, since I move to California, I have developed a strange spuerpower. I can tell where people is from by just seeing them a fraction of second. My friends here are really astonsihed to see me apply my superpowers and they can't still understand how I can tell who is from spain without hearing them talk and after seeing them for a fraction fo second in the distance with an accuracy of 100%. I can't understand it either...
Before I say goodbye, a couple of recommendations. If you live in the US, subscribe to Netflix (http://www.netflix.com/) and go to the cinema to watch You don't mess with the Zohan. It is the best movie ever. A brilliant comedy. If you are in Spain, I am afraid that the dubbing might be crappy and with voices from famous(?) comedians from tv... I would suggest you do an effort and watch the movie in english.
talk to you soon

...summer in the city...
Sorry all for not having updated my blog in a long while... the reason was that I moved. Now I am living in New York city. Even though I am not in California anymore, I really miss California and there is where I started dreaming, so this is still going to be where I write about my California dreams.
I will update extensively very soon.
ps. if anybody know anybody in NY let me know, I know almost nobody so far...

...updating...
I know, I haven't updated the weblog in a while... a long while... I am very busy these days.
A very brief update. I have lots of work these days, plus I am teaching a class and I have to hold extra review sessions, extra office hours...
I went to the cinema a couple of times lately... worth to mention Iron Man and Indiana Jones. The first one is a really good (and funny!) superheroe movie. Tony Stark is the coolest super heroe ever and he shows it in the very last scene of the movie.
On the other hand, Indiana Jones, far from being as good as the other 3 ones, is a great adventure movie that I really enjoyed. The only thing I didn't like was the "theme" chosen for the movie (even though it is a topic I have always been interested in) and specially what happens at the end. I just wish they had taken the great plot for Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis for the 4th movie.

I've been doing many other things but cinema, but they deserve one post each one, so I'll keep them for future updates.
As fast and brief brainstorming: Pau Gasol less than 7 games away to be the first catalan (and spaniard) winning an NBA ring, The Offspring new album coming out very soon, Don't Mess with the Zohan (new Adam's Sandler movie) coming out soon... and looks like it's going to be hilarious, Eto'o, Ronalidnho i Deco al carrer... i que n'aprenguin! and my graduation coming very soon too... next Saturday is the commencement ceremony. I'll try to post some pictures...
